The Eric W. Herzberg Memorial Scholarship - Maryland is awarded each year to deserving well rounded students in the areas of academics, athletics and community service. It is awarded in remembrance of Marine Lance Corporal Eric W. Herzberg, a Severna Park High School graduate who gave his life in service to the United States on October 21, 2006 in Al Anbar province in Iraq.

Scholarship recipients will be selected annually by the Eric W. Herzberg scholarship committee. The scholarship committee will consist of at least three members of the Herzberg family to include Eric's father. Students must submit an application and all required information by the deadline. Recipients will be notified by phone call or letter no later than April 15th of each year.

The completed application form with all supporting documentation must be received electronically by March 15th of each year. The selection committee e-mail is eherzbergfund@hotmail.com.

No late applications or parts of the application packet will be accepted.

Criteria:

1) Applicant must be a United States citizen.
2) Applicant must currently be a student at Severna Park High School in Maryland.
3) Applicant must be on track to complete high school with a 2.5 GPA or better.
4) Applicant must have participated in at least one season of a team sport or a school sanctioned activity in each of the last two years of high school. This participation can include recreational leagues not affiliated with the high school.
5) Applicant must have participated in a non-paid volunteer activity in each of the last two years of high school.
6) The applicant's financial need will also be a significant determining factor.

3) A high school transcript.
4) Signed parental consent (can be electronically signed).

What is the extent of the Eric W. Herzberg Memorial Scholarship? What expenses does it cover?

Maximum scholarship amounts will be established annually for students attending public community colleges, public four-year or other public technical learning institutions. Scholarships are expected to average approximately $2,500 per year per student for a total of $5,000 per student. The Eric W. Herzberg Memorial Scholarship - Maryland is a "last dollar" award, which will not replace or reduce other federal, state, institutional, or private grants for which the student may qualify. This scholarship will help meet remaining unmet needs and will reduce or eliminate the need for students to assume loan debt.

Do students need to be enrolled in college programs of study leading to four-year college degrees?

No! The Eric W. Herzberg Memorial Scholarship can be used to defray expenses for students attending public community colleges, public four-year or other public technical learning institutions. Scholarships will be awarded for two years of full-time undergraduate study, renewable each year subject to a recipient's continued eligibility.
