October 2017 Update:

Mr. Herzberg,

It is great hearing from you.  I am currently a senior at the University of Maryland, majoring in Journalism and Minoring in Spanish. I spent last semester in Sevilla, Spain, living with a host family and taking classes solely in Spanish. It was an incredible opportunity and an amazing semester. I am hoping to go back to Spain soon to see my familia and the friends I made over there.

I have been very fortunate in the internships I have had the past two years. Last fall, I worked at Capital News Service, a wire service through the university.  I had articles picked up by the Associated Press and published in six different countries and more than 30 publications, including the Washington Post and Chicago Tribune. I’ve had few greater thrills then seeing my name in the Post. This summer I worked down in Wilmington, North Carolina, for a newspaper called the Star News. I covered local news and businesses. It was a great learning experience and I was fortunate to be published about 15 times.  My senior year has been incredible, and I am both excited and nervous to see this chapter end.

I can’t wait to read every one else’s responses, particularly Maddie and Lauren because it has been far too long since I talked to them.

Love, Robbie

Robbie – wow, what an incredible set of experiences you are having.  If I was you, I’d hate to see it end too!  We are going to look for your articles in the Post and Tribune.  How cool is that?  Thank you for keeping in touch and letting us know how you are doing.  Many blessings to you and your family.

Love, Eric and Wendi Herzberg

August 2015 Update:

Hello Mr. Herzberg,

Sorry for the incredibly late message, I didn’t get nominated for Most Likely To Be Late To Graduation for no reason. Freshman year of college was awesome. I became a tour guide first semester, and absolutely loved it. It was a little hard to give tours to people when I was still getting lost around campus, but after six weeks of training I was ready to give my own tours. I started a project within the Maryland tour guides to interview and discover each tour guide’s reason for coming to Maryland. My goal is to be able to put the reasons of every tour guide in a book that we will eventually be able to show to interested students. What better way to convince someone how great the University of Maryland is than 200 different reason people chose UMD.

First semester I also started writing and editing for an online sports blog, The Left Bench. The website was named one of the top Amateur sports blogs in the area by The Baltimore Sun. I got to interview a lot of really cool sports figures through The Left Bench and Maryland’s journalism school, The Merrill School of Journalism. One of my favorite interviews was with Frank DeFord, the legendary sports writer. I was fortunate enough to interview him for almost two hours, receiving advice and listening to stories of past super stars. I started doing a radio show a month into school with a friend I met in class. One of the incredible things Maryland offers is the opportunity for anyone who is interested to start a radio show. My partner Lamar and I had no background in radio, but we were able to secure a Friday show that our parents could listen to, which brought our audience up to four people. After some hiccups in the beginning (like not realizing our microphones were off for a segment), we hit our stride with the show and began producing shows I am proud of. We have added two more people to the show, and slowly increased our listenership. While we are still small, I love producing our own material and being heard by an audience.Second semester I was still looking for a group of friends to hang with, so I decided to join a fraternity. I had no interest until it happened. I joined Delta Sigma Phi, the same fraternity my brother had been president of a few years before. I really enjoy all of the brothers, and found a group of friends I can always count on.

I’m really excited for the sophomore year to start!

Robbie Greenspan
