On April 19,2012, a program was presented to about 100 students at Eric’s high school in Severna Park called “Character Does Matter”. It taught the students about the role of character in a person’s life and used the examples of Eric’s life and that of Travis Manion, another Fallen hero. The program taught the students about four pillars of character: courage, leadership, integrity and service. The program was presented by three representatives from the Travis Manion Foundation – Sam Stanton, Mike Barikian and Josh Jabin. Mike and Josh are active duty Marine Corps officers who knew Travis personally.

Eric’s dad also presented information about a challenge grant he received from the Travis Manion Foundation for $4,500. This will be matched by Eric’s family and placed into three $3,000 scholarships to be awarded to SPHS students in the spring of 2013. Eric’s dad put together two service opportunities for the students. One is two separate Habitat For Humanity build events to take place over the summer and the other is an opportunity to write Fallen Hero biographies that will go on a web site for the Fallen Heroes Portrait Project. This is a foundation directed by Eric’s dad in which a custom portrait drawn by internally acclaimed portrait artist Michael Reagan is given to each Fallen Hero’s family free of charge based on their request. An individual memorial page is created for each Fallen Hero which features a digital image of the portrait and their biography. The Foundation web site is here – www.fallenheroesproject.org

Today was a wonderful day of sharing about the character and integrity of two American heroes – Travis Manion and Eric Herzberg. It is hoped the students were moved and motivated by the presentation. There was a great deal of interest on their part to participate in the service opportunities. Stay tuned for future updates on those!
