2013 Maryland Scholarship Recipient – Conor Doherty

Hello, Mr. Herzberg,
This is Conor Doherty, your 2012 recipient for Maryland. I’m sorry that I never stayed in touch but it’s never late than never to start doing that. You may use this for my page if you would like.
I wanted to thank you for choosing me as your Maryland recipient for 2012. It meant a lot that I was chosen for something so special and important to the Severna Park community. Since graduation from Severna Park, I attended Virginia Tech where I graduated in 2017 with a degree in Multimedia Journalism with a minor in history. I’ve always wanted to bring to life stories that may not be the biggest, most important or most impactful but stories that affect smaller groups, groups that are not covered as much, forgotten by the mainstream world. And I feel that I have been able to do just that.
I currently work at 1430 WNAV in Annapolis as an on-air news anchor where I’ve covered several local protests surrounding the restrictions on local restaurants, high school athletes who weren’t able to play sports this past fall due to the pandemic and the Capital Gazette fighting for their newsroom to not be shut down. I’ve also been able to interview local politicians and get their views on such issues, providing differing viewpoints on such issues. Currently, I’ve begun working on a master’s program in Strategic Communications from University of Maryland, University College where I hope to learn new and interesting ways to utilize communication, PR and marketing to reach ever increasing audiences.
Eric has been a positive impact on my life as I’ve always felt that I need to help as many people as possible because it is my duty to do so. I might never see combat like Eric did but I have chosen my own fight to go against. Both of my grandparents on my mom’s side are buried in Arlington, in one of the Columbariums close by to Eric’s grave. Every December, my family takes part in the wreath laying at Arlington and every year, I make sure to visit Eric, say hi and thank him for his service and for his impact on my life.
It’s surreal that it was 8 years ago that I received this scholarship but it is still something that I will always be proud of and I hope that we can meet again in person, Mr. Herzberg.
I hope you had a very Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year and are staying safe during these difficult times. Whenever this is over, maybe we can meet and catch up on the past 8 years.
